Roads Bill Passage, Budget Update, & College Savings Plan

 The final week of the legislative session is upon us, and with most of the House’s major work complete, all eyes are trained on the Senate.

Roads Bill Passage: As I mentioned in my newsletter last week, my House colleagues and I would take a vote on a bill to fix our dangerous roads and bridges. The legislation reforms the Department of Transportation governance model, making it substantially more accountable and fully funds our most immediate needs without raising taxes. The bill passed the House and the Senate must now act. It is my hope they do not once again water-down our substantive reforms to the DOT.

Budget: The House appointed a conference committee to iron out the differences between the House and Senate budget version. I expect the conferees will have a final budget next week where a final up or down vote can be taken in the House. I will be looking to ensure we fund core functions of government while keeping an eye out for wasteful spending.

College Savings: If you or someone you know will have a baby on May 29, that person is eligible for a grant of $529 to start a 529 college savings plan. The privately funded grant is available to anyone opening an account for their child by August 30. Contact the State Treasurer’s Office for more information.

Wrapping Up: Next Thursday, June 2nd at 5:00 pm the House and Senate will both stand in final adjournment for the regular session under the “Sine Die Resolution” (Latin meaning: “Without Day”) passed this week. I’ll update you next week on when the House will have to return to consider any outstanding matters, conference committee reports, or gubernatorial vetoes.
